Reinventing the Pointe Shoe : how Actble worked with us to bring the world's first 3D-printed pointe shoe sole to life

For centuries, the pointe shoe has barely changed. Dancers still wrap, pad, and break in shoes by hand, chasing a fit that's rarely perfect and never lasts. Actble, a startup based in Germany, set out to change that with a modular pointe shoe — one where a replaceable knitted upper and lacing system click into a precision-engineered sole, extending the life of the shoe and cutting down on waste.
The challenge was the sole itself. It's the core functional component of the entire product, and it had to do two things that don't usually go together: stay rock solid under a dancer's full body weight balanced on the toes, and still flex naturally with the foot's movement. Actble came to us to help make that possible.
The ask
Actble needed a production partner who could reliably 3D-print soles technical enough to meet the demands of professional pointe work — with the precision, material consistency, and room for iteration that a first-of-its-kind product requires.
"We were looking for a production partner who could reliably 3D-print the highly technical soles for our modular pointe shoes," says Sophia Lindner, Founder & CEO of Actble. "The sole is the core functional component of the product, so precision, material consistency and the ability to continuously refine the design were essential. Our objective was to create a sole that supports the dancer — very stable, carrying the body weight on the toes — while still allowing the foot to articulate naturally."
The outcome
Together, we developed a flexible, durable sole engineered specifically for the mechanics of pointe work. Its engineered structure provides support where it is needed while allowing controlled movement in other areas due to different material thickness and geometry.
The result is a flexible, durable sole specifically developed for the demands of pointe work in Ballet. As part of a modular system the sole will be combined with a replaceable knitted shoe upper and a lacing system so dancers can refresh their shoes without replacing them entirely — extending the product's lifespan and reducing waste.
This type of Pointe shoes are the first 3D printed ones on the market, help reduce pain and pressure points immensely and support dancers in 55 countries.
The how
For Sophia, the value of the partnership went beyond the technical output.
"What we valued most was the collaborative and solution-oriented approach throughout the development and production process," she explains. "The team understood that this was not a standard 3D-printing project and worked closely with us on technical details, material behaviour and repeated design iterations. Their flexibility and willingness to test, learn and improve alongside us were particularly valuable."
That back-and-forth — test, learn, adjust, test again — is what it took to turn a genuinely new idea into a pointe shoe dancers can trust on stage.
